We all have our unique strengths in life.
It would help us greatly if we used our strengths to guide us as we continue to walk through our journey in life. We have much more to gain when we focus on our strengths than if we try to repair our weaknesses.
As we go through life we often lose touch with what our strengths really are and as a result we might feel frustrated, anxious, depressed, uncertain, etc. During times like this others often tell us to, “Walk THIS Way.” In other words, for us to deal with our problems in a way similar to how they would.
It is out of kindness that someone else may tell you to try to “Walk THIS Way,’ however, this might be a good approach for them but not necessarily you. Someone will grow much more in the areas where they are the strongest, therefore, it is important that you learn to “Walk YOUR Way.”
It makes much more sense for someone to focus on their strengths and build a plan to develop them rather than to dwell on their weaknesses. I have found that when I continue to try to “Walk THIS Way,” I usually no longer focus on my strengths.
Instead of dwelling on the challenges that I experienced after I had sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury, I learned to focus on my strengths of being a very patient, kind and giving person.
My interest in giving to and helping others led me to volunteer in the “Neuro-Trauma Intensive Care Unit” at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. I have volunteered in this important role since 1999. This position brings me much happiness and a sense of purpose.
Focusing on my strengths enhances my drive and determination to try to overcome any adversity that comes my way.
Managing around my challenges rather than dwelling on them has helped me to function effectively in my teaching career as well as with my volunteer work at St. Michael’s Hospital.
FYI – Playing and listening to Music has helped me greatly in my journey.
Wishing you much strength as you continue to:
