Self-Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing

Write your story. Everyone loves a good story. And TBI survivors have great stories 🙂

The question is, will you self-publish or go with traditional publishing ?

In traditional publishing, the author writes their book, then writes a proposal to submit to a publisher. An editor at the publishing company reads this letter and decides either to accept or reject it.

If the publishing company decides to publish the book, the publisher buys the rights from the writer and pays him or her an advance on future royalties. The publisher puts up the money to design and package the book, prints as many copies of the book as it thinks will sell, markets the book, and finally distributes the finished book to the public.

You lose all control when a publisher decides to buy the rights to your book.

They can even change your cover design if they want.

The process is different for self-publishing. An author who decides to self-publish basically becomes the publisher.

The author must proofread the final text and provide the funds required to publish the book, as well as the artwork.

The author is responsible for marketing and distributing the book, filling orders, and running advertising campaigns.

Basically, when you self-publish you have to pay all costs. But, you also get all the royalties.

This has worked well for me for all the books I have written. But, it also has been a lot of work.

At first, I did try to go with a traditional publisher but I received many rejection letters.

These publishing companies are in the business of making money and they want a story that will make them money.

As such, they are looking for authors who have great stories that will attract a lot of attention, or authors who are already well known to the public and will likely get a lot of attention. This was the case with J.K. Rowling and “Harry Potter”

For my latest book I used the following company to help me with the publishing process:

https://www.createspace.com/Products/Book/

This is a great company that is associated with Amazon.com. There is a price for the services they offer but they can help you get your book displayed on Amazon.com.

Hope this information helps. Best of luck 🙂
